The menopause is the stage in a woman’s life when periods stop, the ovaries no longer produce eggs, and the amount of the sex hormone oestrogen declines. It normally occurs between the age of 45 to 55.

Around 8 in 10 women have mild symptoms at menopause, but some may develop more severe problems.

Short term symptoms

  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Urinary problem
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of libido
  • Irritability
  • Loss of concentration
  • Crying spells

Long term health risk

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Age-related muscular degeneration
  • Changes in cholesterol levels

Lifestyle changes

An adequate intake of calcium-rich food like ragi, fish, drumsticks leaves and dairy products etc and regular weight-bearing exercise will help to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Exercise also helps to protect against heart disease, as does stopping smoking and eating a healthy diet like adding soya product, vitamin E rich foods like wheat germ, nuts, eggs, Olive oil.

To control body weight and blood cholesterol select low-fat dairy foods and cut down on saturated fats like butter, cheese, and ghee.

Carrot and beetroot juice is found very use full in menopausal disorder.

Foods to be restricted

  • Spicy foods like pickles
  • Coffee, ea
  • Chocolate
  • Alcoholic drinks
  • Refined products.

This period is to be viewed as a normal stage in a lady’s life. However, the members of the family must realise that during this stage in the life of a women needs lot of attention, care and understanding to make the day to day life tension free
